Your Responsibilities

As an Assistant General Counsel for John Deere Financial U.S. located in Johnston, IA, although may be open for qualified candidates in Chicago, IL, Des Moines, IA, or Moline, IL you will provide research, legal counsel, recommendations, and alternatives for legal questions and issues in the General Practice Areas of:

  • Consumer & commercial secured installment / lease transactions and revolving credit, and related debt collection, litigation, and bankruptcy.
  • Banking and payment services.
  • Data privacy and information security.

In addition, you will:

  • Draft and negotiate complex commercial or technology documents including opinions, contracts, notices, agreements, registrations, and licenses.
  • Explore and assess legal requirements for new tech tools and AI resources.
  • Manage all aspects of litigation and alternative dispute resolution with adverse parties to ensure favorable results are achieved.
  • Develop and execute training on legal matters for groups of various sizes to improve efficiency and ensure compliance with General Practice Areas legal requirements.
  • Stay current on emerging trends in the law in the General Practice Areas through continuing legal education, reading, professional conferences, and participating in professional associations.
  • Support projects for Deere’s Global Law Services Group.

What Skills You Need

  • 10 or more years of legal experience & expertise in General Practice Areas laws.
  • Broad knowledge of the U.S. credit industry and markets relative to the General Practice Areas.
  • Ability to assess and manage risk within the General Practice Areas.
  • Ability to anticipate the impact of legal issues and advice on a business and its operations.
  • Ability to anticipate potential legal and regulatory issues by watching trends in the law in the General Practice Areas and proactively evaluating proposed and enacted laws & regulations and their impact on a business.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for technology.
  • Ability to lead and influence cross-functionally (tech and non-tech teams) to resolve complicated problems.
  • Real team player with a positive and proactive approach.
  • Strong skills in interpersonal communications, negotiation, and conflict resolution.

Education

Ideally, you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school and licensed in Iowa or state of residence.
