Your Responsibilities

As an Analytical Lab Materials Engineer for John Deere World Headquarters, located in Moline, IL, you will:

  • Conduct thermal and chemical characterization of polymeric, elastomeric and composite materials in support of our suppliers and Deere’s internal business processes (OFP, PDP and TDP).
  • Provide formal reports to internal customers that interpret analytical results for a broader, non-technical audience.
  • Work within a global, multifunctional team to conduct failure analysis investigations that provide recommendations and corrective actions to internal and external customers.  

In addition, you will:

  • Understand polymer and organic chemistry with a focus on industrial applications.
  • Understand the relationship between material performance and rheological properties as generated through melt flow, rotational rheometry and gel permeation chromatography.
  • Conduct chemical exposure/compatibility testing between polymeric materials and commonly used agricultural chemicals and automotive fluids.
  • Maintain 5S practices for the lab, manage chemical & gas inventories and gather approvals for all new chemicals prior to delivery.
  • Perform periodic equipment calibrations and maintenance guided by written procedures and work with vendors to resolve any technical issues.

What Skills You Need

  • 1 to 3 or more years of experience with Melt Flow, Rotational Rheometry, GCMS, FTIR, DSC, TGA, TMA, DMA, SEM/EDS and XRF testing procedures, equipment and associated software.
  • 1 to 3 or more years of experience with Organic or Polymer Chemistry.
  • 1 to 3 or more years of experience with computer software: MS Office, TRIOS, KnowItAll. 

What Makes You Stand Out

  • 1-3 years of experience with contamination analyses and reporting.
  • Experience with fractography using macro/microscopic photography.
  • Experience with MS SharePoint administration.
  • Experience using VBA to write macros in Excel. 

Education

Ideally, you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Organic or Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent work experience in a related field
